The seminar is a forum for the Ottawa community and recent newcomers to Canada to engage in rich conversations related to: \n\nCommunicating more effectively across cultures and leading more inclusively\nExamining hidden biases and assumptions\nApplying best practices when working across cultures and navigating the Canadian workplace\n\nWe will also invite our mentorship alumni to share their successful mentorship experience and cultural transition experiences. Refreshments will be provided and parking is free along the street after 5:30 pm. \nKarima Kara is described as an engaging and inspiring facilitator\, coach and mediator. She is in her element when she supports professionals in diversity and inclusion\, hidden bias (uncovering blind spots) and wellness initiatives. Karima holds a Master’s degree in Educational Leadership from McGill University. She pursued further professional development by becoming a certified integral development coach and mediator from the Centre for Effective Dispute Resolution (CEDR) in the UK. \n  \n

You will hear many of Michel Legrand’s most beautiful songs as well as some lesser known pieces that are just as delightful\, in English and French. Soft romantic songs will share the stage with energetic rhythms while a touch of humour will color the whole performance. Pimienta Blanca is the latest project by longtime collaborators Karen Rauh (keyboards)\, Mark Fraser (bass)\, and Allyson Rogers (drums)\, who have been exploring Latin jazz repertoire since 2012. They are thrilled to add saxophonist and multi-reed player Richard Page to the line-up and have recently performed as Pimienta Blanca at the 2018 Merrickville Jazz Festival and regularly at other Ottawa-area venues. Pimienta Blanca’s infectious rhythms awaken the senses and bring energy to the bandstand\, winning rave reviews from local audiences. \nPresented by the 2019 Ottawa Jazz Festival.

DESCRIPTION:The Capital Youth Jazz Orchestra program was founded by director Nicholas Dyson in Ottawa\, Canada in January 2009 to create an opportunity for Ottawa’s university music students to study and perform both classic and contemporary big band music. Members are drawn from the pool of talented young musicians from the three National Capital region post-secondary music programs\, as well as a few exceptional high school students. \nWe have performed with many notable guests over the years – JUNO-Winner Bria Skonberg\, Patrick Breiner\, Jason Logue\, Mike Webster\, Lex French\, Mark Ferguson\, Mike Tremblay\, Petr Cancura\, Ed Lister and more. \nCYJO proudly promotes and performs a large amount of Canadian content\, and our performance at 2019 Ottawa International Jazz Festival will be 100% Canadian compositions. Some by members of the band\, others by JUNO-Winner Christine Jensen\, Mark Ferguson\, Joe Sullivan\, John Macleod\, and of course Rob McConnell & the Boss Brass. \nCYJO 10th Anniversary Alumni Band is made up of past members of CYJO\, many of which are now working professional musicians.

DESCRIPTION:Born and raised in the Ottawa Valley\, Julie Corrigan is a warm & soulful country singer/songwriter hailing from the small town of Shawville Quebec. \nJulie’s hometown has been a source of inspiration for many of her songs from her debut album The Language\, recorded in Ottawa at Little Bullhorn Studios with producer Dave Draves. Through memories of growing up on a farm along the Ottawa River\, her songs tell stories of heartache\, loss\, tragedy and a longing for going home. \nKnown for her stunning performances across Canada Julie has been featured on CBC Radio and CKCU FM in which “The Language” was the #1 played album of the year. Most recently\, Julie has been in the studio recording her sophomore album with producer Jim Bryson and will have new music to share in 2019.
