The list goes on and on.<\/p>\n<p>Adding to the fun of early summer in the city is Welcoming Ottawa Week, a series of free events highlighting Ottawa as a welcoming city to newcomers. The \u201cWeek,\u201d which actually runs June 17\u201330 this year, is an opportunity to appreciate the amazing contributions of newcomers, while creating opportunities for learning and interaction for all.<\/p>\n<p>There is so much to choose from. I\u2019ve highlighted just a few great free events below. You can find out more by accessing the calendar at <a href=\"https:\/\/welcomingottawaweek.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">welcomingottawaweek.ca<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h3>Tastes and Sounds of the Middle East<\/h3>\n<p><em>Tuesday June 18, 12pm\u20131pm @ Ottawa Public Library, Main Branch<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Middle Eastern food is enjoying a renaissance around the world, thanks in part to the success of chefs like Sami Tamimi and Yotam Ottolenghi of Jerusalem cookbook fame. Closer to home, places like Ottawa\u2019s upscale Fairouz and shops like Mid-East Foods are further fueling interest in Middle Eastern cuisine.<\/p>\n<p>Racha Pharaon and Mansour Sweidan came to Ottawa as Syrian refugees just over a year ago and <a href=\"https:\/\/ottawa.ctvnews.ca\/syrian-refugees-pursuing-the-canadian-dream-opening-businesses-in-ottawa-1.4433086?cache=yes%3FclipId%3D104069%3FclipId%3D89563%3Fot%3DAjaxLayout\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">already own and run a successful restaurant<\/a> called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/bbkitchenottawa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Big Bite Kitchen<\/a> in the ByWard Market.<\/p>\n<p>You can enjoy food samples from their kitchen, while learning more about Syrian-Jordanian food, at this free event. I figure henna art is the perfect alternative \u2013 it\u2019s natural, it\u2019s temporary and, best of all, it doesn\u2019t hurt!<\/p>\n<p>So I am very excited that the Ottawa Public Library will be hosting free henna application by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ottawahenna.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Henna Lady<\/a> at five different branches\u2014free of charge. Dickinson Branch: Saturday June 29, 11am\u201312pm<\/li>\n<li>Blackburn Hamlet Branch: Saturday June 20, 2:30pm\u20133:30pm<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr>\n<h3>YOCISO Talent Showcase and \u201cWrestling with Champions\u201d<\/h3>\n<p><em>Friday June 21, 2pm\u20135pm @ Mooney\u2019s Bay Beach<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Where else would you get to meet with a 12-time Syrian Wrestling Champion?<\/p>\n<p>Mohammed Al-Krad arrived in Ottawa in 2016 as a refugee from Syria and soon after began coaching wrestling as a way to become part of his new home. His story became the focus of an award-winning <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tvo.org\/video\/more-than-a-refugee\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">TVO short documentary<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This year, he initiated a program for newcomer youth through the Ottawa Community Immigrant Services Organization (OCISO) called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/ottawa\/syrian-wrestling-1.5120000\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wrestling With Champions<\/a>. Every Wednesday and Friday evening, about a dozen boys ages 10 to 18 learn from him at OCISO\u2019s Newcomer Youth Centre in Ottawa South.<\/p>\n<p>During this special WOW event, Al-Krad will demonstrate wrestling skills and discuss the finer points of the sport. She came to Canada from Iran, completed her PhD in Theoretical Biochemistry in Toronto and became a scientist and published author.<\/p>\n<p>Saba also performs and teaches dance. In this free event, she\u2019ll be teaching a fun, interactive workshop on Persian Dance for people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds. Her particular style integrates Iranian, East Indian, Arabic and African influences and this one-hour class will include the basic movements to create and perform a short piece as a group at the end.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/apt613.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Mural.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-174360\" src=\"https:\/\/apt613.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Mural-273x300.jpg\" sizes=\"(max-width: 273px) 100vw, 273px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/apt613.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Mural-273x300.jpg 273w, https:\/\/apt613.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Mural-136x150.jpg 136w, https:\/\/apt613.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Mural.jpg 400w\" alt=\"\" width=\"223\" height=\"245\"><\/a>OCCSC \u201cTransformation\u201d Youth Colouring Event<\/h3>\n<p><em>Saturday June 23, 11am\u20131pm @ 215 Wurtemburg Street (at Rideau)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Looking for a free, creative, outdoor activity for the kids this weekend?<\/p>\n<p>Last year, artist Claudia Salguero worked with the local community to create a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/ottawa\/largest-mural-unveiled-in-ottawa-1.4890673\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">nine-story mural called \u201cTransformation\u201d<\/a> on an Ottawa Community Housing building in Lowertown, touching on themes of change and diversity.<\/p>\n<p>Claudia will be on hand this Saturday in front of the mural to lead an art workshop for children and youth aged 8\u201314. They\u2019ll recreate the mural on handouts and create a large chalk drawing out in front.
