As newcomers build their lives in a new country, understanding the Canadian health system — and how to shape it — is key to ensuring better care for all. This welcome session invites immigrant women and families to learn about active health research at the University of Ottawa’s CO-CREATH Lab, why their participation matters, and how their unique experiences can help improve health care for their communities.
Through open conversation and guided discussion, this event will explore how health information is collected, used, and protected in research studies. Participants will learn what it means to take part in health research, through innovative programs such as Peer Equity Navigators (PENs); discover what rights they have over their health data; and how they can be partners in shaping more inclusive and equitable health outcomes.
Together, we will:
Share stories about our experiences with healthcare and research
Learn how health research helps improve patient care and promote health equity
Explore concerns about data privacy and data governance in health
Discuss how immigrant voices can lead to better and more empowering health systems
